{1800} PHYSICAL EDUCATION (9-12)

The goal of the physical education program in grades 9-12 is to instruct all students to be equipped with the skills and knowledge to lead a physically active lifestyle. Addressing and evaluating students according to the RI Physical Education Content Standards accomplish this goal. All students will demonstrate competency in many movement forms and proficiency in a few. They will also apply movement concepts and principles to the learning and development of motor skills. Students will understand the implications of and the benefits derived from involvement in physical activity. They will apply physical activity-related skills and concepts to maintain a physically active lifestyle and a health enhancing level of physical fitness. Students will demonstrate responsible personal and social behavior in physical settings. They will also be introduced to many cooperative games as well as dance. Finally they will understand how one’s environment influences physical activity. All of these standards will be met through participation in a variety of activities.

 

HEALTH EDUCATION (9-12)

Health Education is a required course for all students in grades 9-12. Students take one semester of health each year. The health curriculum is standards driven which means all instruction addresses or evaluates each standard. The eight content areas are mental and emotional health, injury prevention, nutrition, sexuality and family life, disease control and prevention, substance use and abuse, personal health, consumer and environmental health. Students are evaluated by the following health education standards: knowledge, accessing information, behavior, the influence of media and culture, communication, decision-making, and goal setting and advocacy.

Grade 9-The content areas and topics within in each content area are as follows. Sexuality and Family Life-CT-Safe Dates, abstinence, contraception, HIV/AIDS/STD’s, sexual pressures & current issues Mental & Emotional Health-depression, suicide, self-injury, eating disorders, death and dying & current issues Substance Use and Abuse Prevention-club drugs, marijuana, alcohol and current issues

Grade 10-The content areas and topics within each content area are as follows. Injury Prevention-Community First Aid & Safety (CPR certification) Nutrition-valid nutrition information, safe weight management, Fad diet Personal Health-hygiene & valid fitness information Mental Health –CT-stress management Sexuality and Family Life-Safe dates & relationships

Grade 11 The content areas and topics within each content area are as follows. Substance Use and Abuse –CT-all substances research project & marijuana debate Mental and Emotional Health-mentally ill vs. mentally healthy Sexuality and Family Life – Safe dates, gender orientation, contraception, pregnancy, self exams & current issues

Grade 12 The content areas and topics within each content area are as follows. Consumer Health-CT-valid health information, careers Environmental Health-local and global warming issues Personal Health- personal health plan Sexuality and Family Life-Safe dates, parenting & current issues

 

 

{800} INTRODUCTION TO SPORTS MEDICINE & ATHLETIC TRAINING (10-12)

Students who are interested in athletics and the medical needs of athletes are the intended target of this course. Students will be given an insight to the up and coming discipline of sports medicine and athletic training which is growing at a pace far exceeding other disciplines. Students will explore four distinct areas: sports medicine, athletic training, anatomy, and physiology. Students are able to grasp the concepts of anatomy and physiology and then apply them to sports medicine and athletic training. Introduction to Sports Medicine & Athletic Training is organized into four units.

Unit #1—Introduces students to the rapidly growing fields of sports medicine and athletic training.

Unit #2—Examines the roles and responsibilities in athletic training

Unit #3—Covers injury assessment and management

Unit #4—Special considerations in athletics

 

{801} HIGH PERFORMANCE PHYSICAL EDUCATION: (10-12)

This elective is geared toward students in grades 10-12. HPPE is designed to take a more in-depth look at some of the individual and team sports that are offered through the regular physical education curriculum. This class will provide students with an opportunity to try a variety of new activities. Classes will be held in both a classroom and the gym. (1/2 credit).
